The primary cause of failure relating to espresso machine elements is scale, over time scale can collect on the machines element and eat away at it until the element has nothing left to give because it is having to work too hard. Heating elements can also die because of an internal electrical fault on the machine, sometimes through age, or because of electricty surges coming from the mains supply. The life of the machines element is also affected by the amount of times it has to heat up, that is one reason why you should avoid drawing water from your coffee machines water tap. When you do this you cause the boiler to refill and the element to subsequently work harder because it has to heat up all over again. Continuous and pro-longed use of the machines water tap can therefore reduce the life of the element, if you need lots of water for drinks over than coffee, consider buying a dedicated water boiler, these boilers are relatively inexpensive, there is nothing worse than having all your ground coffee beans ready to work, when your machine will not. Elements are recognised not only by the make and model of the machine, but also by the amount of groups the machine has, the shape of the end plate, how many holes it has in the end plate and how many electrical terminals it has on the end.
