A luxurious but worthwhile investment for those who want to get the extraction from their coffee beans down to perfection. There are various schools of thought on how long you should extract water through ground coffee for. The most common belief is that it should take between 22 and 25 seconds to pull a double shot of espresso from beginning to end when using a 14 gram dose of ground coffee. It is said that a single shot using 7 grams of ground coffee should take around 15 seconds. A ristretto shot is longer run and takes 30 seconds to produce a single shot. In terms of volume a single shot is 1 fluid ounce and a double is 2 x 1 fluid ounces of espresso. These times should only be taken as general guidelines as different coffee beans work better with different extraction times and at the end of the day it is all down to the drinkers own taste preferences and requirements. It is always a good idea to note how long your preferred extraction has taken with a particular espresso blend as in times of varying humidity and room temperatures, you may need to change your grinder settings, so it is handy to have those times available as a reference point.
