Initial Research Results

Fairtrade coffee beans have been the talk of coffee enthusiasts, shop owners and vendors in the uk, we made it our business to research information on the subject and consequently develop our own range of beans.

We started off by asking our customers what they thought of Fair Trade beans.
The answers to our question were varied, one comment that kept cropping up was the fact that a lot of people had tried to go the Fairtrade route for their coffee but they had been very dissapointed with the quality in terms of taste.

A lot of vendors felt that they would sell less coffee and would lose their customers to nearby competition if they made the change. But on the upside there was a genuine interest in supplying fairtrade from an ethical point of view.

Vendors were expressing the fact that they would be happier if they knew that the coffee beans they were using had originated from a source where the farmer was paid a decent amount of money for his or her efforts.

We spoke to a number of home enthusiasts who make and study coffee as a hobby, once again a fair few felt that when trying a new coffee for the first time, they would hold less faith in a coffee that was promoted as being fairly traded.

Fair Trade Coffee Prices

The other issue that bothered our customers were the prices that they had been quoted for Fairtrade coffee, though not from us we may add !.

There were many who felt that although the farmers were clearly being paid well, perhaps they were being charged too much for the benefit of knowing that, in other words they believed that the cost that they would pay in relation to the amount that the farmers would benefit from, in terms of price and relative percentage, was not balanced.

Having said that most people agreed that they would expect to pay more for a fairly traded bag of coffee beans and did not begrudge doing so because they felt better for doing that and more comfortable in the fact that they were being more ethical.

There were others who felt that when they had tried Fair Trade beans they had noticed an inconsistency in the blend, flavour and quality of the beverages they were producing from the coffee beans over time.

That is they felt that the beans were not always the same, when for instance they bought in May, if they then bought the same brand and model of bean in July, the product appeared to be different altogether.

Buying Fair Trade Coffee - The Reasons Why you should ?

Quite a few people asked us why they should buy Fair Trade Beans. There are many reasons why people do:

Buying coffee beans that display the Fairtrade logo ensures that the producers of the coffee beans receive a decent income.

This protects them from being hit by the ever changing price of their product on the world market, consequently the coffee producers receive a stable price for their product.

This enables the farmers to invest in their own development heightening the potential for ensuring sustainable production practises.

The bottom line is FairTrade helps to eliminate exploitation, which can only be a good thing.

We as a company like to think that a growing number of the uk population are concerned about the origins of the products they consume and what that may mean for the people who produce it.

Supplying Fair Trade coffee shows that you care and encourages loyalty amongst customer who prefer to buy their coffee from ethical coffee shops, restaurants, pubs, cafes and so on.

Although it may cost a little more to buy, the bottom line is it only costs you a couple of pence more per cup as a supplier and usually about the same as a consumer.

Fair Trade & Organic Coffee ?

A lot of people asked if we could supply them with a coffee that was both Fair Trade and Organic.

Given the upsurge in organic produce consumption and the continuing worries regarding results of food scientists who research preservatives and chemicals used in farming and post production of foods, we decided that this was worthy of further research, was it possible to roast a Fair Trade coffee which was also Organic and still get a decent espresso at the end of it?

In order to legitimately call your coffee Organic you need to have the beans certified at source by the Soil Association, as well as having the beans cretified as Fair Trade.

This limits the sources from where the beans can be obtained but in the end didn't prove to be a problem.

Our main concern was that the Organic side of things did not end up producing a 'muddy taste', we had come across many organic coffees which did and we didn't want that as part of our portfolio of beans on offer !

During our research people talked of being able to taste 'the farm' from their previous experiences of trying samples given to them in the past (not by us though)!!

Buying Organic Coffee - Things you may wish to consider

It's healthy, there are no additives,Organic food comes from trusted sources.

All organic farms and food companies are inspected at least once a year. The standards for organic food are laid down in European law.

The UK government has said that Organic production is better for wildlife due to lower pollution being emitted from sprays, organics produce less carbon dioxide, the main gas responsible for global warming.

Many people prefer organic food because they say it tastes better and recently there have been a number of top chefs who agree with this, consequently they are switching to Organic food and ingredients.

Conclusion - Fair Trade coffee research.

Well we having completed our research gathering lots of valueble research along the way relating to Fair Trade and Organics the next stage was to perfect two roasts.

The first roast we tackled was the Organic Fair Trade.
It took months to get it right but now we have it it's here forever !

What we ended up with was an extremely nice 'afternoon coffee'.
In other words a coffee which is smooth and not overly strong, yet nice to taste, a coffee that can be drunk at any time, but not one that you could call a 'morning coffee', a morning coffee by definition is a coffee that gives you a massive hit to get you going for the day ahead.

Our Fair Trade Organic coffee beans are subtle, it is an espresso blend that is gentle and not in any way muddy like some other blends you will find on the market.

It is a genuine Fair Trade Organic coffee having been certified by Fair Trade and the Soil Association, so you have the best of both worlds, a genuine product which tastes lovely and is available at a very competitive price.

We are very proud of this coffee and have aptly named it Happy Donkey Fair Trade Organic !
