Happy Donkey are suppliers of Tamping Mats. Tamper mats are a useful addition for your espresso coffee machine set-up, for a number of reasons. They are generally used as a space on the counter top for resting the Coffee Tamper on to start with, this is good practice because the tamper always has a 'home', so it is easy to locate, especially in a commercial coffee set-up. Then they are used for resting the coffee machines portafilter or filter holder against, whilst tamping (or compressing) the ground coffee. This helps to avoid scratching the worktop and also provides a non-slip base on which to tamp, from a safety point of view this is a real added bonus. Tamping mats are also used as a base against which the milk jug is knocked. Giving the jug base a knock against the mat, after having foamed the milk is a good way of knocking all the air out of the bigger bubbles. Most professional Barista use the mats for all the above reasons and so this accessory has become a real must have amongst those who are serious about making coffee. We recommend getting the larger mat as this is specifically designed for the job and has built in raised edges, these work well by helping to retain any coffee grounds which go astray after tamping, they are also dishwasher proof.
